The famous Danish sculptor Kai Nielsen has built up a magnificent oeuvre during his short life. He started his artistic career as a painter, then went from 1902 to 1906 to the 'Konlige Danske Kunstakademi' in Copenhagen to learn sculpting. In his early work he follows the Danish naturalistic sculpting tradition, but after studying sculptures by Auguste Rodin and Constantin Meunier in the Glyptotek in Copenhagen, his work becomes freer and more sensual. In his bronze, stone statues and sculpture groups he combines movement, form and feeling. Nielsen also designed small sculptures for the Danish pottery and porcelain factories Bing & Grondahl and Royal Copenhagen.
