As a pupil of Andreas Schelfhout, Kleijn painted many winter landscapes with figures skating and sledging on reflective ice. He also made summer river and beach scenes and panoramic landscapes in which he unerringly conveys the tranquil atmosphere and warm light of the season’s days. In 1840 he stayed for a time in Kleve, Germany, but it is not known whether he went there to see B.C. Koekkoek. There is no concrete evidence that he had lessons at the latter’s drawing academy. Only a few of his paintings, depicting city motifs and the area around Kleve, confirm Kleijn’s time spent in this city.
