Louis Apol, painter of the Hague School, almost exclusively painted winter landscapes and snow-covered forest views. People play a subordinate or even no role in this. All attention is focused on nature. The painter found the most beautiful (winter) landscapes in and around The Hague and near Arnhem. He also painted a number of summer river and heath views. In 1880 Apol traveled with an expedition on the polar schooner Willem Barentsz. to Spitsbergen. During this trip he made many drawings and watercolours of the Arctic.
