The Leiden industrialist Lucas Verkoren combined his work from 1928 with a successful career as an artist. He regularly went out with the Leiden impressionist A.J. van Driesten, sometimes also with Chris van der Windt, to paint the landscape. At the end of the 1930s, he developed into a distinctive realist under the influence of the Dutch movement Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. Electing was a driving force behind Leiden's artistic life. In 1948, museum De Lakenhal devoted a retrospective to his work.
