Ludolph Berkemeier painted seascapes with fishing boats, landscapes and beach scenes. Although we was born in the Netherlands (Tilburg) it was only after he met Joseph Hagen, his teacher at the academy of Düsseldorf, that he discoverd the beauty of the Dutch shores. From 1896 on he lived and worked in Noordwijk near The Hague and Scheveningen. There he painted traditional motives such as shell fishers and arriving and departing fishing vessels, but also the upcoming modern beach life in Scheveningen and Noordwijk.
