Ludolph Berkemeier painted seascapes with fishing boats, landscapes and beach scenes. Although he was born in the Netherlands (Tilburg), he discovered the beauty of the Dutch coast through his teacher Joseph Hagen at the Düsseldorf academy. From 1896 he settled in Noordwijk. There he devoted himself to traditional motifs such as shell fishermen and fishing barges as well as to the emerging mundane beach life in Scheveningen and Noordwijk.
