Like his brother Friedrich, Ludwig Voltz specialized in painting animals after his academy years in Munich (1843-1845). For years his main patrons were the princes of Thurn und Taxis and von Wallerstein, for whom he painted horse portraits, hunting scenes and landscapes. Voltz also made wood engravings for the weekly magazine 'Münchener Bilderbogen', which were published as separate prints between 1848 and 1898.
