M.J. Drulman, who often used the pseudonym M. de Jongere, is widely known as the painter of Rotterdam's port life. Throughout the forty years that Drulman lived and worked in the city along the Meuse, the busy shipping traffic on the Nieuwe Waterweg and the ever-expanding harbours provided a continuous source of inspiration. His deft, impressionistic brush strokes heighten the vibrancy of his compositions. Drulman also painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits, but these are less well-known.
