Martinus Wilhelmus Liernur painted landscapes with cattle, farmyards in Drenthe and narrative genre pieces with peasant girls or old people in the lead role and young women deep in thought. He was born in The Hague into an artistic family. His brother, Paulus Antonius, was an engraver and draftsman and his cousin W.A.A. Liernur made a name for himself as a painter of interiors and genre pieces. Martinus Wilhelmus was a student at the Academy in The Hague in 1844-1845. In 1956 his work was shown for the first time at the Exhibition of Living Masters in his hometown.
