After studying at the Frankfurter 'Städelschule', Mateo Cristiani worked for a number of years in an applied arts studio. At the end of the 1920s he settled in Frankfurt where he opened his own studio and in 1931 became chairman of the local artists' association. Christiani was a versatile artist. In addition to being an artist and painter, he was an illustrator of novels and poems.
