Raised on the country estate of Cromwijck in Maarssen, Nico Bastert had a lifelong love of the Vecht river landscape. He studied at the art academy in Amsterdam and ultimately settled in The Hague, spending summers in Breukelen where he took a cottage called Bohème with the painter Geo Poggenbeek (1881-1887). Among the subjects he painted in this period was the hollow post mill that once stood on the dyke surrounding Breukelen's Otterspoorbroek polder. In later years, Bastert continued to paint the Vecht, alongside the waterways around Amsterdam and a large number of other river and water landscapes. He lived out his life in Nigtevecht. Bastert is usually associated with the late flowering of the Hague School.
