The Austrian-born artist Paul Buchholz worked in the Hamburg area, where he painted landscapes and harbour scenes in an impressionist style. But he was especially able to capture the atmosphere of the shady streets in the old parts of Hamburg and Lunenburg. In the summer he worked on the Elbe beach, often in the Hamburg district of Blankenese, where he captured the colourful, cheerful scenes of beach walkers and children playing in the sand. He also found his inspiration in fairs, which he preferably painted with their magical lighting at night. He travelled within Germany, including to the Königssee in Bavaria. Buchholz took part in exhibitions of the ‘Hamburger Kunstverein’ and died around 1930 in Tostedt in Lower Saxony.
