The Belgian artist Paul Kühstohs, who died young, painted this windmill along a polder canal at the age of 19. The canvas has a spectacular monumentality, not only because of its large format, but also because of the solitary placement of the mill against a wide sky. The subject has a distinctly Dutch character, which is not surprising, because Kühstohs also worked in the Netherlands. He probably followed his teacher Franz Courtens in this, who regularly stayed with his northern neighbors from 1878. With the bright color palette, the light effect and the lively brush with which the scene is painted, Kühstohs shows his artistic origins: like Courtens, he mainly made impressionistic landscapes, often with a luministic touch.
