Fixierter Schwarzclown mit Clownstickerei
gouache on paper 60.5 x 46.7 cm, signed u.l. and dated 1979

This work on paper was previously for sale.

The Viennese painter Peter Sengl is one of the most idiosyncratic artists in the Austrian art world. He combines painting with graphic elements in a recognizable, wonderful form language. A large photo archive, built up over decades, forms the basis for his collage-like compositions. References to famous works of art, animals, flowers and handicrafts are as frequent as images of himself; often puzzling are the elaborate titles he gives to his paintings. In 1988, the artist had a solo exhibition at the Vienna Museum of Modern Art. At the end of 2015, a retrospective of his work opened in the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
