The Hague sculptor Peter van der Meer studied at the Hague Academy under Dirk Bus and Henri van Haaren. He was called a 'sculpture kneader', because he built his human figures and animals from slabs of clay or wax and then had them cast in bronze. In addition to small, figurative sculptures, he made monumental sculptures for public spaces. Many of them can be found in The Hague. Just like his teachers at the academy, he was able to depict scenes from everyday life very strikingly and often with humour.
