Petrus Gerardus Vertin mainly lived and worked in The Hague. He painted cityscapes in summer and winter. Sometimes his work is topographical, but mostly he painted fantasy scenes. Especially in its winters, Vertin paid a lot of attention to the reflection of light on houses and streets. Charles Rochussen painted the upholstery in this cityscape. He came from a wealthy family and only chose to paint at a relatively late age. He mainly painted historical and military scenes, but also a subject was the pastime of society circles such as harness racing and sailing competitions. Rochussen was also a skilled lithographer and illustrator.
