Old Rotterdam with its quays, squares, harbours and ships makes up most of the oeuvre of the Rotterdam painter Hendrik Pieter Groen. Born in Kralingen in 1886, he first came to Rotterdam to attend the art academy there and remained loyal to the city for the rest of his life. Occasionally he also painted still lifes, flowers and landscapes.
