Piet Smissaert is inspired by nature, but he also works with abstract themes. He was educated at the academy in The Hague and was taught by Theo Bitter, Paul Citroen and Willem Schrofer, among others. Until 1965 he mainly worked in a lyrical-abstract style, after which he opted for a figurative, new-realistic visual language. Smissaert painted portraits, figure pieces, still lifes and abstract scenes. Besides work on canvas and paper (watercolor, gouache) he also made wall paintings. The artist exhibited several times at Pulchri Studio in The Hague (1971, '72, '74) and his work was also exhibited in Eindhoven's Van Abbe Museum (1961. '69).
