Piet van Engelen made a name for himself with animal portraits and genre scenes. He often places his animals in clever or unusual compositions, whether or not narrative or with a humorous undertone. Like his brother Louis van Engelen, seven years older, he was educated at the Antwerp Academy, a city where he continued to live and work. At the age of 35 he was appointed professor at this academy as a talented artist.
