Piet Volckaert, born in 1902 in Sint-Gilles, studied at the academy in Brussels. He mainly painted landscapes and cityscapes. He also liked to etch and draw, and also worked with gouache. Volckaert easily created an intimate atmosphere on canvas by means of dark colour combinations.
