P.G. van Os was the son and student of the famous still life painter Jan van Os. However, he specialized in landscapes with accurately painted cattle, in line with the Dutch 17th-century painting tradition. During the period that he lived in 's Graveland (1810-1819) he made several landscapes with game; his hunting still lifes are rare. From 1830 the painter lived in The Hague with his daughter, who was married to Jacob Abels. He occasionally upholstered his landscapes with cattle, as he did with B.C. Koekkoek and Andreas Schelfhout.
