From the thirties of the nineteenth century, Pieter Hendrik Thomas made a name for himself as a painter of landscapes and marines. In terms of painting style and attention to realistic details, his 'turmoil waters' and tranquil river arms with ships are reminiscent of the work of contemporary Hermanus Koekkoek sr, although he did not elaborate on the riverbank landscape and the ships on the horizon, for example. In addition to navies, his oeuvre also includes several cityscapes of Amsterdam. We do not know much about the painter's personal life. He was born in 1814 in Bielefeld, Germany, and lived and worked in Amsterdam between 1830 and 1862. Then he moved to Utrecht.
