From the thirties of the nineteenth century, Pieter Hendrik Thomas made a name for himself as a painter of landscapes and marines. In terms of painting style and attention to realistic details, his 'turmoil waters' and tranquil river arms with ships are reminiscent of the work of contemporary Hermanus Koekkoek sr, although he did not elaborate on the riverbank landscape and the ships on the horizon, for example.
