Pieter Oosterhuis was twenty years old when he exchanged his native Groningen for Amsterdam in 1836. His father trained him as a painter, a profession that he would continue to practice for the rest of his life. He especially preferred interiors and Dutch cityscapes. What is special, however, is that Oosterhuis also developed into a pioneer in the field of photography. In 1851, he was the first in the Netherlands to make stereo photographs and cityscapes for commercial sale. He would also make a name for himself with recordings of hydraulic works and bridges. His photos stand out for their strong composition, which is said to be due to his experience as a painter.
