The 17th century painter Pieter Jansz van Asch was born in Delft. His father, portrait painter Hans van Asch, was his first teacher and in July 1623 he was admitted to the guild of Delft. Van Asch is known for his landscapes, in which animals and figures are almost never missing. In addition, it is often farm houses, ruins, church towers or windmills that embellish the view. Van Asch specialized in landscapes. Over the years he gained so much experience that he was able to reproduce forests and reflections in water faithfully on canvas. Leading museums have work by Van Asch in their collection, including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
