The artist Rien Goené, born in 1929, makes small sculptures in bronze and iron and monumental sculptures as well as paintings. Initially the abstracted figure is the most important motif in his visual language, but a austerity gradually sets in. This leads to powerful, simple forms and occasionally to completely abstract compositions. The sculptor Goené can be found in the early, colourful painting 'Interior with figures'. In the portrayal of the prominent female figures, he restricts himself to stylized, plastic forms, idiosyncratically distributed over the surface of the canvas.
