The artist Marinus van der Neut was exceptionally multitalented but never did very much to promote himself. For this reason his work is only known within a limited circle. Early on Van der Neut painted landscapes, still lifes, people and animals in an Expressionist style and in a richly variegated palette. The painter gradually began simplifying his subject matter until by the early sixties he was painting entirely abstract compositions. Van der Neut studied at the academy in The Hague, under the tutelage of the naturalists Arend Hendriks and Hendrik Meijer. He was a member of the Hague painters’ group Verve (1951 to 19570, hence his work is considered as belonging to the Nieuwe Haagse School.
