Roland Larij was born in 1855 into a Dordrecht family of painters. He was a brother of Cor Larij and a cousin of Jan Larij, painter of landscapes and still lifes. After training at the academy in Antwerp, he specialized in painting interiors and landscapes under the influence of his teacher Edgar Farazijn. Before that, he regularly traveled from Dordrecht to Heeze in Brabant. He usually spent his summers in Katwijk and Drenthe. Contacts with de Marissen, Mauve and Israels resulted in a free, loose style of painting and attention to the atmosphere and mood of the moment.m.
