Provenance: part. bezit België.

The Belgian painter Romain Steppe had a preference for seascapes, which he painted in an impressionist touch. His marines and landscapes show his interest in the changing effects of light and the characteristics of sunlight according to the time, season and weather. He often took the Scheldt as a source of inspiration, but he also worked on the Belgian coast and in the port of Antwerp. Later Steppe traveled to England, the Netherlands, France and Italy. In 1887 he settled permanently in his native Antwerp, where he exhibited regularly and was a member of the artists' circle 'Als ik kan'. Steppe was a student of the landscape painters Joseph van Haerde, Johannes A. Boland and Isidoor Meyers. His work can be compared with that of the well-known Dutch marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag.
