Stellan Mörner was a Swedish nobleman, artist and writer. He belonged to the 'Halmstadgruppen', a group of artists that had its roots in Halmstad on the Swedish west coast. Mörner is counted among the great Swedish surrealists. He also felt attracted to the theater and designed many sets for the Stockholm Opera and other theaters in Sweden, including in 1946 for Shakespeare's comedy 'Twelfth Night'. After he initially studied art history, Mörner began painting in 1922. As early as 1926 he had his first exhibition. His surrealist paintings are characterized by a romantic touch. He also experimented with painting on wood, stone and rubble, with collages and finger paintings and even with handprints. After an impressionistic, almost non-figurative period, he eventually returned to surrealism.
