Theo Mackaay is both a sculptor and painter. He is the designer of the well-known Gouden Kalf (1980), the prize of the Netherlands Film Festival. Mackaay makes small sculptures, larger-sized sculptures and works for public space. The artist studied stonemasonry in Utrecht and then studied at the Rietveld Academy and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He works, in stone or bronze, stylized figuratively with reference to the archetypal form. Important subjects for his images are women, horses and other animals, warriors and life themes such as birth, fertility, sexuality and love. Because he intensifies or simplifies the elementary, organic form in his images, they are particularly expressive. The artist calls it 'deformed figurism'.
