Animals have been the favorite subject of sculptress Theresia van der Pant for 50 years. Birds, horses, bison, fish, etc., in an abstracted figurative form in bronze or stone. 'Animals are not shy, there is no embarrassment,' she once said. And: 'A seal or a dolphin, as they come out of the water, are images in themselves.' Van der Pant studied at the Amsterdam Rijksacademie, to which she later became a teacher, and worked for a number of years at the studio of the Belgian sculptor Oscar Jespers. She is one of the most important Dutch post-war sculptors and has been awarded many times, including the Prix de Rome (1953) and the Judith Leyster Prize (1987).
