Animated street scenes with flower sellers and figure pieces with young, elegant Parisiennes are common in the oeuvre of the Parisian painter Victor Gilbert. Gilbert's market scenes are particularly well-known, however: the 'marchés aux fleurs' in particular, but also appetizing displays of vegetables, poultry or fish. Scenes that appeal because of their realistic slant and the picturesque atmosphere. Gilbert was trained by the history painter Victor Jean Adam and the landscape and animal painter Charles Busson. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and received multiple awards for his work. Gilbert also collaborated on the decorative murals in the Paris City Hall. His work is included in the collections of museums in, among others, Nice, Bayeux, Lille and Besançon.
