Vincent De Vos, or Joost-Vincent de Vos, was a Belgian painter who received his education at the Academy of Kortrijk. Here Edward Woutermaertens introduced him to realistic painting of animals. De Vos became known for his colourful, humorous paintings of dogs, sometimes with costumed monkeys on their backs. In his studio in Kortijk he kept various animals, which served as models for his performances; dogs, wolves, foxes, monkeys and even a camel. Recurring elements in his paintings – usually small in size – are shoes, boxes and musical instruments. De Vos is the very best in his work in which he depicts wandering street dogs. Together with the brothers Emmanuel and Zacharie Noterman, he was one of the most important 19th-century Belgian painters of dogs and monkeys, which were attributed human characteristics. De Vos often signed only his surname 'De Vos', in a 'hidden' spot on the painting.
