Bomschuit-style ships, the fish auction on the beach and the sea at Katwijk are a few of painter Wilhelm Hambüchen's favourite subjects. Following the footsteps of numerous other German artists, he made his first trip to this popular Dutch seaside town shortly after 1900 to paint the picturesque local fishing life. He came back every summer for an incredible 50 years. Tirelessly and with broad, deft brush strokes, he painted the striking fishing boats, the flat beach under skies with drifting clouds, and the lively groups of people that gathered after the boats returned with the day's catch.
