Van Konijnenburg initially painted portraits and landscapes in an impressionistic style. In 1894 his style changed under the influence of the stylized and symbolically charged work of Toorop and Thorn Prikker. From that time on, he devoted his art to portraying universal truths such as the struggle between good and evil and between dark and light. Before that he used religious and mythological themes and a painting style based on geometric principles. He also made fluent and well-drawn advertising and illustration work.
