Willem Willemsen received a thorough training in draughtsmanship in Arnhem, and subsequently also took drawing classes at Amsterdam's Rijksacademie, where his teacher was the Impressionist August Allebé. This artistic training is reflected in his work. His impressionistic landscapes and town and villages scenes featuring Arnhem and the Dutch Veluwe and river regions attest to an interest in light and atmospheric effects as well as a precise representation of topographical details. Born in Arnhem in 1866, Willemsen lived and worked there his entire life with only a few interruptions.
