Willem Steelink trained at the National Academy of Arts in Amsterdam. He specialized in painting and etching Amsterdam cityscapes and portraits of fellow citizens such as Jacob van Lennep. He also painted or watercoloured genre paintings, often domestic scenes in a romantic, realistic style. Steelink joined the artists' association Arti et Amicitiae in 1854. He taught one of his sons, Willem Steelink Jr.
