Willem van Dort was the son of the sea and port painter Willem van Dort Sr and descended from an old fishing family. In part he shows himself to be a son of his father: he also painted fisherman figures and (Rotterdam) harbor views. But his oeuvre also includes landscapes, cityscapes, figures and nudes. Van Dort Jr lived most of his life in Rotterdam and was educated there at the Academy van Beeldende Kunsten.
