William Norton was a well-known marine painter. His subjects include traditional beach and seascapes with fishing boats as well as modern scenes depicting the pleasure yachts and regattas of wealthy Americans. Norton was born in Boston in 1843 and studied under Antoine Vollon in Paris. Until 1902 he traveled along the coasts of France, Holland and England. Then he returned to America.
