Sport was a favorite subject of Shutter. He made his first 'sporty' drawing in 1897 of his fiancé Agatha with a tennis racket in her hand. Shutter's other sports subjects included golf, football, cycling and horse racing. When he was on his way to faraway places – Sluiter was a wanderlust type – he made countless sketches on the spot. For example, he hilariously portrayed well-to-do tourists in the winter sports villages of Davos and St. Moritz in Switzerland. He was the first artist to ridicule winter sports in this way. Shutter, whose main theme was man, working or having fun, saw the humor in everything that happened around him and the snow slopes where anything could go wrong were a rewarding subject for the painter.
