The Belgian painter, sculptor and graphic artist Yvan Theys initially paints abstractly. In the early 1960s, together with Roger Raveel, among others, he develops a new vision of the relationship between abstraction and figuration, from which the 'New Figuration' arises. The painters who belong to this group make paintings with a recognizable image, but turn away from a correct perspective representation of reality. A friction arises between flat and spatial, figurative and abstract. Like many other artists from the New Figuration, Theys soon went his own way again. His work became more stylized and geometric, but rarely if ever completely abstract. Both in his paintings and sculptures, human figures are usually the subject.
