Literature: Han Steenbruggen e.a., 'Job G. Hansen 1899-1960', De Ploeg 4, Groninger Museum, Groningen 1997, Oeuvrecatalogus pag. 134, cat.nr. 189 ('Gracht met zwanen, in de schaduw mensen').
Exhibited: Schiedam, Stedelijk Museum, 'Job Hansen', 1-25 maart 1963.

Job Hansen is one of the most fascinating painters of De Ploeg. As an architect he became a member of this Groningen painting society in 1923, and it was fellow member Jan Altink who then encouraged him to paint. As a self-taught artist, Hansen proceeded to develop a highly personal idiom based on an unconventional way of handling paint and support. He preferred to paint on plywood, first giving it a white ground. Onto this he applied diluted paint using both a broad brush as well as his fingertips and palms. For him the white base was a crucial visual element: it represented light and space, out of which his depictions loomed, sometimes barely recognisable. Hansen chiefly painted floral still lifes and landscapes.
