The city of Amsterdam has traditionally been loved by painters. In the early 19th century, our capital was the center of the romantic cityscape. The romantic painters were fond of the beautiful buildings and picturesque canals. Later on, the Amsterdam Impressionists mainly showed the dynamics of the city in their works. Anthonie Pieter Schotel had a great predilection for capturing river and seascapes in delicate, gray tones. Around 1950 he painted this Leidseplein from the top of nightclub 'Extase' and shows the Amsterdam world through a sunny veil of mist.
