The painter Ad Blok van der Velden, born in 1913, is the most famous painter from Texel of the 20th century. 'Blok' was born in Dordrecht and attended the academy in Rotterdam. In 1934 he came to Texel for the first time, where he was captivated as a natural person by the beauty and unspoilt nature of the landscape. In 1940 he settled permanently on the island. The still uncharted landscape, the farms, the beach and the dunes were a constant source of inspiration for his colorful, impressionistic paintings. From 1971 the painter stayed more and more in France and then in Italy, where he died in 1980.
