Adolf Höfer was born in Munich in 1869 and attended the academy there. The painting lessons of the progressive painter Paul Höcker were of great influence on his artistic development. In the summer months, he went out into nature with his students to paint outside. The Scholle artists' association soon arose from this group of students. The common aim was to give space to individual experiences instead of rules and to exhibit jury-free. In 1899 their first exhibition opened in the Glaspalast. Höfer had meanwhile also become an illustrator for the weekly magazine 'Jugend' and designed advertising printing. In 1906 he returned to painting. His most beautiful work dates from this period: impressionistic garden and park views, women and nudes in nature, painted with a broad brush and a colourful palette. 1914 he enlisted in the army and everything came to an end. disillusioned, he took his own life in 1927.
