The German artist Adolf Stademann mainly painted landscapes, genre scenes, sometimes moonlit. He lived and worked in his hometown of Munich. In the period 1860-1890, Stademann came to the Netherlands a number of times. Andreas Schelfhout, one of the best-known interpreters of the Dutch ice scene, inspired him to paint Dutch-looking ice scenes. Not only in the Netherlands, but also abroad, these skating scenes were popular for their typically Dutch subject. In addition, the fine elaboration and realistic details were the reason for their popularity.
