The Hague painter Adriaan van 't Hoff learned to be an artist at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in his birthplace, where he was taught by F.R. Jansen and D. Bautz. Van't Hoff would develop into a versatile artist and mastered various techniques; he painted, watercoloured, drew and etched. The painter made a trip to Italy and Germany, but lived and worked in The Hague. There he was also a member of Pulchri Studio. Although the popularity of Jugendstil and Art Nouveau declined around 1910, influences of this movement are visible in various paintings by Van 't Hoff. He may have also become acquainted with this style during his travels.
