Adriana Haanen was specialised in painting still lifes with flowers and fruits, sometimes with dead game included. In her work the transition from the traditional, formally arranged, floral still lifes of the 17th and 18th century to the more natural bouquets and still lifes of a century later can be seen. Like the younger painters Margaretha Roosenboom and Gerardine van de Sande Bakhuyzen, she devoted attention to the natural appearance and individual character of the flowers she depicted. Haanen favoured spontaneous arrangements, sometimes in a basket, and painted in a vibrant palette.
