The style of the Hague painter Adriana Sophia Fontein has its roots in the Hague School, but is also strongly determined by the naturalism and impressionism of her teacher Albert Roelofs. She preferred to paint landscapes, flowers and still lifes, focusing in particular on capturing mood and atmosphere. In her work one sees no bright colors and strong accents, but a calm, subdued color scheme. After 1946 the painter lived and worked in Sneek, Heemstede, Baarn and Hilversum, but she remained a member of De Haagse Kunstkring during those years.
