Albert Jurardus van Prooijen became known for Dutch landscapes with cattle, a popular genre in the 19th century. Besides landscapes the artist initially also painted marines and townscapes: between 1860 and 1868 mainly his birthplace Groningen, whereafter in Deventer, Zutphen, Vorden and Vaassen. However, his affection grew more towards meadows with cows. His early works are more in the style of the Romantic period and after 1870 he painted with rougher brushstrokes.
